Bay Area Reporter H&G Review

12/27/07

A brief review of Hope & Glory from The Bay Area Reporter Online.

As the lead singer for Heart, Ann Wilson's voice established the band as rock icons during the 1970s and 80s. On her solo debut (!) Hope & Glory (Zo') she turns her attention to an array of songs by other rock icons, enveloping them in her powerful, distinctive vocals. She duets with out stars such as k.d. lang (Lucinda Williams' "Jackson"), Elton John (EJ's "Where to Now, Saint Peter?") and Rufus Wainwright (Dylan's "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall.") Wilson proves that she is the female Robert Plant with her take on Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song," and by singing a duet with Plant's recent duet partner Alison Krauss on Neil Young's "War of Man." She does John Lennon proud on "Isolation."

-- Hard to believe it has been almost 4 months since it's release!

Christmas Waits Lyrics

12/16/07

Here are the lyrics to the song Christmas Waits from the Lovemongers Christmas album. These are such wonderful lyrics I thought I would post them.

How long have I been watching from my window Running through my life Watching it all go by Seems like I've always got a destination Running down the time Pushing to the front of the line

I wanna be where the snow is falling Voices of friends like angels calling (Out in the pines - oh beautiful tree) I wanna be there where Christmas waits for me

Christmas waits, Gather round the fire let the weather rage outside
Christmas waits, I always will be welcome for the rest of my life

Creative Loafing Dreamboat Annie Live Review

Heart
Dreamboat Annie DVD/CD
BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH
Published 12.12.07

In 1976, a Led Zeppelin-inspired female singer/songwriter was a rare treat indeed. Heart was doubly blessed with talented sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, leading the way for a wave of future generations of harder-edged, melodic rockers. For the debut of the Legendary Albums Live series of CD and DVD releases, also airing this month on DirecTV, the Wilsons revisit their debut, performing Dreamboat Annie live for the first time in the sequence of the original record. A sensual and turbulent meld of acoustic/electric guitar interplay and vibrant vocals, the album was a triple-platinum-awarded foundation of confident girl power. Thirty-one years later, the songs resonate with an added vitality and worldly maturity. A compelling encore of Pink Floyd, Who and Led Zep covers close the affecting show, ably illustrating how they forged Daltrey/Plant wailing with grandiose, folk-injected Townshend/Page guitar dexterity into their own unique, decidedly feminine style. 5 stars. -link

Intrepid Media Ann Wilson Interview

12/11/07

Portrait of an Artist: Ann Wilson
heart’s voice cries out about war and hope
by tracey kelley

Ann Wilson Interview from IntrepidMedia.com

In Hope and Glory, you explore the world's troubled times through legendary songs by artists such as Bob Dylan ("A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall"), John Lennon ("Isolation"), Led Zeppelin ("Immigrant Song"), and others. Those of a particular generation may recognize these songs as cries from previous conflicts, but what impact do you hope to have on younger people with that selection?

Well, I hope they will listen to these words and these songs and get the message. Take the messages from an earlier time and receive them inside their own time.

How did you approach many of your collaborators, including Elton John, Alison Krauss, Rufus Wainwright, k.d. lang, and Shawn Colvin, about the Hope and Glory project? Is this the kind of effort that many other artists say, "Oh, HELL yes!" to?

Yes, it’s an “Oh, HELL yes!” experience to both listen to it and be the one experiencing it! My producer and collaborator Ben Mink and my manager Carol Peters were the people who actually made the connections, but most of these artists I’ve met before. It really wasn’t too much of a jump. I just had to get them the music and tell them what I wanted and they said, “Oh, HELL yes!”

Alison Krauss was possibly the only artist I hadn’t met but after she sung her part, she called back with this most delightful of responses saying how happy she was. That was the first time we’d actually connected – receiving her recorded voice on my phone saying how thrilled she was over the collaboration.

With the bombardment of 24-hour news and arguing pundits, how can a minstrel's voice be heard above the din?

I don’t think it’s an artist’s place to scream louder than pundits. I don’t think that’s the point. Music will always serve as a private score in people’s lives and when people are tired of the screaming and complaining, the music will be there to be their private sounding board.

There's a saying: "Mommas don't send their babies off to war." Does this hold up to political scrutiny?

I don’t know about political scrutiny, but I don’t think a mother should ever send a child to war. If a young man or woman wants to be a soldier, it should be of his or her own volition. If my children told me they wanted to be soldiers, I would try to fight them out of it tooth and nail. However, if they really persisted and it was their own choice, I would understand.

What questions do your children have about the current state of affairs, and how do you answer?

I think I’ve created a couple of monsters, because I have always been outspoken about my antiwar feelings.

I come from a military family with many generations of soldiers behind me, and our family has always been affected by war and especially by post-traumatic stress disorder. I have always been very vocal about war, and my kids scream at the TV when they see Bush on television.

My oldest daughter just received a letter from the Army because she turned 17. The letter said, “If you are interested in doing something after high school, you’ll get a chance to serve, and get an education, blah, blah, blah.” She ripped it into pieces and put it in an envelope with a note, on which she’d written something really rude, and a list of all her relatives who’d been in the Army, and she sent it off. So that’s how just one of my kids responded!

My 9-year-old son still likes the way soldiers look with their guns, but it’s sort of a videotape mentality. I just let them know they won’t be doing any fighting on my watch.

"We're getting older...the world's getting colder." Nearly 30 years have passed since you, sister Nancy Wilson, and Sue Ennis wrote this line as part of the song, "Dog and Butterfly." Do you feel a loss of innocence since then, or do you still have hope?

Yes, I feel a loss of innocence but, at the same time, I am a hopeful person and despite feeling like I’ve seen these patterns happen before, I still have a cock-eyed optimism, as they sang in South Pacific. I still think there is a chance for us, but it will take a lot of pulling together.

I'm certain I'm not the only woman who sang into a hairbrush to that song. What encouragement do you have for up and coming female musicians and vocalists?

One thing is that, if you are going to sing into a hairbrush, it better be a Mason Pearson, and not some cheap drugstore hairbrush!

Seriously, it’s just that there obviously are some snares involved in being a woman in the music industry, so don’t compromise. I don’t think things have gotten easier; they have just morphed from one thing into another. It is still just as likely that a woman will be used for the image she portrays, rather than for the talent she possesses.

So women should be aware that if they are going to make it they are going to have to work harder than guys. Learn to say no to whatever you can, and say yes only to those things that really matter.

Anything else you'd like to add?

I’m going to see Led Zeppelin in London next month and I can’t wait!

Thanks Heart Monger Tracey2007 from the Heart Boards!

Ann says she is going to be a "bundle of emotion" at the show and is going to wear motorcycle boots, a black Kashmir mini dress, and a military coat. Gotta love her style!

From Rolling Stone:

"We've tried to drop 'Rock and Roll' from our sets," says Heart singer Ann Wilson, a longtime Zeppelin fan, "but there's always a place for it, and people always yell for it. They won't let us stop, because it's the kind of straight-ahead, no-tricks, no-nonsense rocker that people just crave."

Ann Wilson at Led Zeppelin Show

Today's the day, Led Zeppers: WCSX on the case in jolly olde London

The legendary rock band Led Zeppelin plays its reunion concert tonight in London, and the closest Detroiters can get is by tuning in to WCSX-FM's (94.7) Jim Johnson and Lynne Woodison today and Tuesday from 6 to 9 a.m., and checking Web updates at wcsx.com. (With the 5-hour time difference, they'll be broadcasting from London the afternoon of and afternoon after the show.)

Producer Jim O'Brien says the Detroit duo will chat up Ann Wilson from Heart, Paul Rodgers from Free and Bad Company, Mick Jones from Foreigner and James Young from Styx, all at the show. Also on tap: a private tour of the Abbey Road Studios and -- don't tell concert security! -- an attempt by JJ & Lynne to schmooze their way into the Led Zeppelin preshow sound check.

They'll also call in with reports this afternoon, while Ken Calvert will kick off a Led Zeppelin Concert Replay at 4:30 p.m., playing recordings of Led Zep tunes as they are performed live in London. -link

Ann Wilson News Snippets

Post-Zeppelin chronology

The definitive post-Zeppelin chronologies and liaisons of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones, following John Bonham's death on Sept. 25, 1980:

Ann Wilson briefly talks about John Paul Jones.

Aug. 1994: Page and Plant reunite to record drastically different treatments of Led Zeppelin songs in Morocco, Wales and at two London concerts -- with two backing orchestras and a large band -- for an 'unplugged' MTV special, Unledded. Jones was producing the band Heart at the time and finds out about the Page-Plant project through the media. "They didn't even call him to tell him," Heart's Ann Wilson told the Toronto Sun. "One night he kind of opened up, you know, in his way, which is very polite ... But he did allow as to how it was a hurtful deal that they didn't even call." -link

Kennebec Journal H&G Review

Carpenter, Wilson release topnotch CDs
Kennebec Journal

The two CDs I've chosen this week come from two artists who I've had the pleasure of interviewing -- Mary Chapin Carpenter and Ann Wilson of Heart. Both ladies released Zoe/Rounder Records albums this year that could easily be called "career-defining" in that both CDs have strong political commentary (both blatant and subtle) sprinkled through the tracks.

"Hope & Glory" is Ann Wilson's first-ever solo offering in her long career as a rocker and is primarily a cover album with 11 of the 12 tracks coming from the likes of Led Zeppelin ("Immigrant Song"), Pink Floyd ("Goodbye Blue Sky"), Elton John ("Where to Now St. Peter?"), and Credence Clearwater Revival ("Bad Moon Rising").

She's joined by some incredible guests who share the vocal chores with her, such as k.d. lang on "Jackson," Wynonna on "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" and sister Nancy Wilson on "Darkness, Darkness" as well as on the Pink Floyd tune and "Get Together" with Wynonna and Deana Carter. Even Sir Elton John himself appears on the aforementioned "Where to Now St. Peter?"

There is one song that she and producer Ben Mink co-wrote titled "Little Problems, Little Lies" that presents the perspective of a dying soldier in Iraq -- couple that with Neil Young's "War of Man" (sung with Alison Krauss) and Lennon's haunting "Isolation" and you have a hard-hitting, topical release that deserves a listen.

For me, though, the highlight has to be her unique take on that Led Zep staple -- it's nothing short of amazing. -link

Heart Tribute

Kathy Dietch sings Heart on Sunday
by Lisa Ann Williamson
Categories: Island Connection

Kathy Dietch, 1995 Wagner College grad is a member of the MTV generation. In fact, as a little girl, she watched the cable network startup with music videos and of all the bands she saw, heard and enjoyed, they was one that held a special connection. "Heart was the first band I looked at and said, 'I could be them,'" recalled the actress and Broadway gypsy who has been working on "Wicked" for the past several years. "I really identify with Ann Wilson. A lot of people say I sound like her."So it made perfect sense that when Dietch was preparing for her cabaret show, she selected the music of the Seattle-based rock band. Sunday, Dietch will present "All Heart" at 9 p.m. at the Canal Room in Manhattan with 16 songs over 90 minutes. That's this Sunday, Dec. 9.

The show is a tribute to the rock band Heart which climbed to success in the 70s with breakout hits like "Crazy on You," "Barracuda" and "Dreamboat Annie." The band made several comebacks and even a concert last year. Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson have kept the band and its music alive over the past three decades.

So Dietch is doing her part to honor Heart's music with a "big fat band with screaming guitars" supporting her in the music of the rock band, Heart. The show, "All Heart" begins at 9 p.m. Cost is $20. The Canal Room is at 285 W. Broadway (at Canal St.). For more information, log onto www.canalroom.com. For a sample of Heart classics, go online to www.heart-music.com. -link

Watch her sing Alone here.

** I am not quite sure what to think of her. Of course she can't top Ann, and I hate any kind of comparison to her. Watch the video and decide for yourself!

Ann Wilson's Jacket

From the Liminist Photography Site -

This is a jacket that Carole McClellan designed for Ann Wilson of the band Heart. I had the privilege of attending a new collection preview at Carole’s studio on November 29. Hit the image above for photos from the party and stay tuned for more of Carole’s designs! -link

In the '70s, Carol McClellan was at the forefront of the leather jacket revolution — everyone had to have one, and she was one of the few people in Seattle making them. She was discovered by Ann Wilson of Heart, then scooped up and taken on tour. From there, her work took off as she became a designer for celebrities and those in their universe. She returned to Seattle and opened her own space.

While she works in other fabrics, her specialty is custom leather, so the rest of us can live like rock stars. From a sample line, customers can pick colors and fabrics for dresses, suits, pants and outerwear. She'll trim with fur (faux and real), beads or other adornments. Her latest find is real leather bonded with a stretchable backing for maximum comfort, without the "pleather" look. Her colors vary with the season - black cherry leather, a deep burgundy with a dark wash over it - is hot for fall; lighter colors appear in the spring.

All this comes at above-groupie, below-rock star prices: A two-piece suit will set you back $2,700, a pair of pants costs around $850, and an armband is $45.

Tip: McClellan has sample sales at the end of the season;, e-mail her at carolemcclellan@yahoo.com to get on the mailing list.

More on the Neverending Story

Seattle Children's Theatre's The Neverending Story has a lot to like.

The play is a world premiere, its director is a veteran of several Broadway shows, and SCT has brought together a veteran cast.

But another main attraction will be the music. The Neverending Story will feature four original songs by Ann and Nancy Wilson of the band Heart.

"They've written various musical themes that help support the story," said David Bennett, who directs the play. "Hearing the songs for the first time really brought tears to my eyes. They're quite inspiring."

The new songs, which will be performed throughout the play, capture a range of emotions. Some are slow and contemplative, while one of the songs, "Don't You Fall," qualifies as "an anthemic rock ballad," Bennett said.

Having the Wilson sisters' contribution is a definite draw for fans of their music. "It's exciting to work with such talented artists," he said. "It's just wonderful to collaborate with people who bring so much to the play." -link

Seattle Times Article

Ann and Nancy are mentioned in an article about the Seattle Children's Theater and their production of The Neverending Story.

"Neverending Story" opens a new chapter at SCT
Seattle Times
By Misha Berson
Seattle Times theater critic

During her prolific career as artistic director of the cherished Seattle Children's Theatre, Linda Hartzell has managed to produce stage versions of the books her now-adult son most adored as a child: "Honus and Me." "Go, Dog. Go!" "Everyone Knows What a Dragon Looks Like."

There was just one left on her list, and she's getting to it now, with SCT's world-premiere adaptation of "The Neverending Story," an elaborate and heartfelt fantasy yarn by the late German author Michael Ende.

And she invited sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, and Sue Ennis, of the Seattle rock group Heart, to contribute a theme song (titled "Don't You Fall") and some incidental music to the production.

Nancy Wilson and Ennis wrote the song, and Ann Wilson sang it in a recorded version for the production. Commented Nancy Wilson via e-mail: "I saw the 'Neverending Story' movie many years ago and always loved the story, and now as a mom, can appreciate anything for kids that is of such quality. There's a good message here, and in these days of disposable junk-food entertainment, this one is a jewel!" -link

"The Neverending Story," opens tonight (Dec 7) and plays Fridays-Sundays through Jan. 27, Charlotte Martin Theatre, Seattle Children's Theatre, Seattle Center; $17-$33 (206-441-3322 or www.sct.org).

A Lovemongers' Christmas

Heart Presents A Lovemongers' Christmas

Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson - known to the world as Heart, of Dreamboat Annie fame - have released a gentle holiday nugget in A Lovemongers' Christmas. The ten-track collection leans toward the acoustic side, highlighted by "Ave Maria" (written by Franz Shubert).

A Lovemongers' Christmas was originally an indie release, and finds the sisters working in an acoustic quartet with songwriting collaborator Sue Ennis on keyboards and performer Frank Cox on mandolin, guitar and piano. Also appearing are Ben Smith on drums, Brad Allison on flugelhorn and piccolo trumpet, and Mary Frank on concert harp.

Half the songs are new compositions, including "Here is Christmas" and "How Beautiful." But holiday albums are about traditional music, and A Lovemongers' Christmas reaches deep into the traditional bag with such songs a "The Last Noel" and "Oh Holy Night!"

A Lovemongers' Christmas evokes images of a gentle Christmas night in London, with snow falling and hundreds of years of traditions. Go easy with A Lovemongers' Christmas. -link

97.7 the River is going to kick start your spring! Join us as we welcome back the Wilson sisters to the Wells Fargo Center For The Arts on Sunday, February 24th! What a show it was last year, can you imagine seeing them again in such a wonderful, intimate setting? Wonder no more! Tickets on sale NOW! BUY YOUR TICKETS HERE!

Keep it locked on 97.7 The River for your chance to win tickets!!

Ann Wilson and her younger sister, Nancy, first showed the world that women can rock when their band, Heart, stormed the charts in the '70s with hits like "Crazy on You," "Magic Man," and "Barracuda." They continued topping the charts into the ‘90s with more hits including, “These Dreams,” “Alone,” “What About Love,” and “If Looks Could Kill,” all of which showcased the sisters’ enormous talents as both musicians and singers. Along the way, Heart sold more than 30 million records, had 21 top 40 hits, and had a profound influence on rock music.

After taking a break in the late 1990s to start families and pursue individual projects (Nancy scored five films for her husband, Cameron Crowe, including the Academy Award winning Jerry Maguire and Grammy winner Almost Famous, while Ann toured and also appeared in several theatrical productions), the Wilson sisters came back together as Heart in 2002. Jupiters Darling released in 2004 featured 15 new original recordings and received high critical acclaim. A live concert DVD (Heart Alive in Seattle) has been certified platinum.

This May, VH1 named Heart as a recipient of their 2007 Rock Honors awards at a dazzling performance event. And, on September 11, Ann Wilson released her first ever solo album, Hope & Glory, featuring guest appearances by Elton John, Alison Krauss, Nancy Wilson, k d lang, Wynonna, Gretchen Wilson, Rufus Wainwright, Shawn Colvin, and Deana Carter.

Ann Wilson XM Radio Artist Confidential to Premiere on December 3

IN SUPPORT OF SOLO ALBUM, HOPE & GLORY (ZOË/ROUNDER)

“Ann’s got great songs to wrap that great voice around and the result is just a record that really blows people’s minds. And for a vocalist to be wowing us 30 years after we first heard her, is something…There is no one better than Ann Wilson.”
- David Wild, Rolling Stone, Contributing Editor

Burlington, MA - After more than thirty years as the pioneering lead vocalist of Heart, Ann Wilson whom L.A Times calls “…No. 1, along with Janis Joplin” sits down with XM Radio’s Artist Confidential for an in depth interview about the making of her first solo album, Hope & Glory. Wilson also performs several tracks off the album backed by her sister Nancy and their Heart band. It premieres December 3 airing all day on XM Channel 2 and on Deep Tracks XM 40 at 2pm ET, with encores Thursday, December 6 at 9pm ET and Sunday, December 9 at 7am ET. Artist Confidential host, George Taylor Morris said “There are only one or two music people who completely take me to another place when they sing. Ann Wilson is one of them. She becomes the song and has that unique quality of being able to transport the listener to where she’s going.” - from the Rounder Records site

Ann Wilson brings along Nancy and the members of Heart to play their take on rock 'n' roll classics belting out songs ranging from "Immigrant Song" to "Dreamboat Annie." When they rock, they rock; and when they roll, they roll. A packed house at XM's Performance Theater engages Ann and Nancy with love and questions spanning their long career as the first women in rock. - from the XM site

Supposedly December 3rd will be an all "Heart" day on XM Radio Channel 2 - this from GW27HEARTFAN4EVR on the Heart boards.
