Heart drummer Ben Smith has been noticeably absent from the past few Heart shows. According to the Heart Camp " a family member is near the end, but has not passed yet. Condolances are pre-mature, but we send our love and best wishes, that angels surround them with love, during this difficult time."
Myself as well as other Heart Mongers wish Ben our condolences during this rough time. Heart is not the same without him and we await his return!
Here is a little more info about Ben Smith.
Ben moved to New York from Seattle, and worked with various groups until his sound caught the ear of pop and R&B icon Pheobe Snow. He toured with her for two and a half years. Not wanting to let his jazz chops cool during this time, Ben also played on two releases by guitarist Glenn Alexander, featuring artists the likes of Randy Brecker (Brecker Brothers) and Mino Cinelu (Miles Davis, Sting) Manolo Badrena (Weather Report), Mark Egan (Pat Metheny), Scott Healy (Conan O' Brian), and T Lavitz (Dixie Dregs), among others. Extensive touring followed these releases, including festivals and club dates at the Blue Note in New York and Blues Alley in Washington, D.C.
Ben began performing with Heart in the fall of 1995, including performances on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" in the fall of '96, the "Ann Wilson of Heart" tour '96, the "VH-1 Fairway to Heaven" concert '96, and the "Ann Wilson of Heart" concert tour '98, as well as the '02 "Summer of Love" US tour with Heart, which included Ann and Nancy Wilson, Mike Inez of Alice in Chains, Scott Olson and Tom Kellock. Recorded at the last stop on their 2002 tour, “Alive in Seattle” documents an impeccable performance by the band highlighting their biggest hits. 2004 saw a new release from the band, Jupiters Darling, and it has quickly become a critic and fan favorite.
Other work with Ann and Nancy Wilson included two releases by Lovemongers (with founding members Frank Cox and Sue Ennis), "Whirligig" on Will Records, and the 1998 holiday album " Heart Presents A Lovemonger's Christmas " on 2B Records, as well as the Lovemongers tour in November and December '97; and other concert dates since then.
Other work has included recording and/or performing with hit record producer Don Gilmore (of Linkin Park, Sugar Ray, John Doe, Lit and Eve 6 fame) on "Buddahead" for Interscope Records; with BoyMeetsGirl on their new release; with Tony Gable and 206 on their new ep; with B.B. King for the Microsoft Network's "Riff" series; with many talented independent artists, including SweetLou, Superlush, Left Hand Smoke and Elaine Summers.
Ben played drums for the Cameron Crowe film (and soundtrack) "Almost Famous", with Nancy Wilson composing, featuring Peter Frampton and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, which included the songs by the band "Stillwater". The soundtrack for this film won the Grammy award for Best Soundtrack at the Grammys 2001, and the film took the Oscar for Best Screenplay. He also performed with Nancy Wilson and Mike McCready for the Cameron Crowe film "Vanilla Sky" starring Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz, including the song "I Fall Apart", sung by Cameron Diaz. Ben recently performed on the soundtrack to Cameron Crowe's new film "Elizabethtown" and also co-wrote a song during the session with Mike Inez and the film's composer Nancy Wilson. -link
Ben's replacement during his absence is Greg Upchurch. Supposedly he has played with 3 Doors Down and Puddle of Mud. According to Motley Sue from the Heart camp "Greg was an awesome addition to the band. He had a few days of rehearsal with the entire band, and with Ben's charts and input. He played a total of 4 shows."
Thanks eves3faces for the photo.

Thanks Motley Sue from Heart management.
If you missed last nights American Idol like I did, you can watch most of the performances on Youtube. While searching through the videos I found another Heart song being done! This time it was Kady Malloy singing Magic Man. Not sure if I like the pop arrangement of the song. They took out most of the "edge" that Heart gave.
Gw27heartfan4ever shared a small clip of Nancy playing the opening to Mistral Wind. This is from the Gibson Amphitheater Show. This just makes me want to go see them! Hopefully more tour dates will be announced. According to the Heartlinker, Heart management is implying that something is in the works for the Heart/Journey/Cheap Trick tour.
Nancy Wilson is the Coolest Chick. Ever.
by Jason Burns
February 23, 2008
So, yeah... I went to the Heart concert at Gibson Amphitheater last night. I'm now convinced that Nancy Wilson is the most awesomest girl on the planet. Seriously. How does she make playing the guitar look so cool and hot at the same time?
Also, watch for this guy Michael Grimm that opened for the band last night. Dude was doing an acoustic solo set, and his amp blew shortly after he began. Most people might have Ashley Simpsoned it, and waited for the crew to work stuff out. Not this guy. With the crowd still clapping along, he smiled and sang on acappella. They fixed it. It blew again. Dude never stopped. A star was born. -link
Emeraldheart24 got the set list for the Gibson/Universal Amphitheater show.

Update March - 2008.
The group will also be recording a new studio album of original material in 2008, their first since 2004's Jupiter's Darling, which "proves in spades that Heart is a vital and creative rock'n'roll unit and a force to be reckoned with," notes All Music Guide, and is "easily the band's finest moment in over 20 years." The San Diego Tribune observed how it featured "some of the best songwriting ever from the group" and "is a welcome return to form," while England's Classic Rock magazine said that Jupiter's Darling is "the only album you need to buy this year."
"We are starting to get the molecules together for the new heart Album." - Ann
" (we are) Collecting Ideas...We have a few things recorded and few things still in the notebook." -Nancy
According to Ann and Nancy the song Sand, which is a"heart monger fan favorite," is probably going to be on the new Heart album."

Heartlinker and heartmonger1457 discovered an Ann Wilson interview for the radio station 98.7 the Peak. Ann talks about owning horses and the difference between touring in 1978 as opposed to 2008. This is a cute interview, thanks for the find!

It was also reported that Dog & Butterfly was on the set list the first night, but wasn't on the second night. Interesting set list I must say! Only one song from Hope & Glory though? Too bad they couldn't take out Love Reign and replace it with War of Man, but the new Led Zeppelin covers are a great choice. However, I do not see When the Levee Breaks on this set list.
Jriver from the Heart boards posted the set list, a tentative one at least.
"Yes, Nancy was rocking on the Blue's Harp aka harmonica (on Led Zeppelins When the Levee Breaks). The Scottsdale show seemed to a slightly shortened set list as Emerson Drive, a country pop band opened.
From memory, the set list in Scottsdale was:
Mistral Wind
Magic Man
Straight On
Love Alive
You Wreck Me
These Dreams
Alone
Wild Child
Love Reign
Barracuda
Crazy on You
Going to California
When the Levee Breaks
There may be another song...just not remembering it at this moment."
Two new Zeppelin tunes and Wild Child are new for this round of touring. I think the last time they played Wild Child was on the Jupiters Darling tour. Thanks John!
A cell phone snap shot of Heart performing at the Westworld of Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show on Valentines Day. This is from a mom who said "Heart was a little loud." Well, they are a ROCK band! :) Check out her blog here.
Heart starts their 2 night run at the Las Vegas Hilton tonight! I bet Ann and Nancy are kickin' up their heals and putting on one hell of a show. Here is a cool blurb about Heart at the Hilton.
"Seattle sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson have been filling arenas for 30 years. Their early days as FM radio stalwarts on through the glamorous string of pop rock hits in the 1980's has cemented their career as bona fide rock legends. Their band still kicks ass and they pull out all the stops in their shows." -vegastripping.com
A small snippet from Heart Monger JRiver from the message boards.
"A fine show tonight in Scottsdale. Just a few notes.. Wild Child is back in the set list and there's some new Zeppelin tunes.Yes, Heart's Going to California and holding the flood waters back When the Levee Breaks.
Ric, Craig on Acoustic guitars, Nancy on the ole Man (mandolin)."
More news to come and hopefully a set list!

Ann and Nancy Wilson never get enough credit for their pioneering work in one of the great hard rock bands -- their sound is as feminine as it is fierce, and influenced every hair metal act that followed. (Plus, their hair wasn't silly.) Nancy is a real mother on guitar. This tour also features material from Ann's recent solo outing, "Hope & Glory."(A.P.) - Link

Arabian Horse Show has Heart
A tradition since 1955, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse will have you hoofing it over to this grand affair. Showcasing more than 2,000 Arabian and Half-Arabian horses, this show draws in crowds by the thousands. After the show's beginnings at the Arizona Biltmore, Ann McCormick bought 150 acres in Scottsdale and made it into the horse facility known as Paradise Park that served the needs of the show for many years. Here the finest horses are challenged in contests and competitions of all sorts. This 53rd Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show will be launched with the Kickoff Party '08, featuring Heart and Emerson Drive in concert on Feb. 14. -link

Want a different type of Valentines day gift? Win an autographed guitar from Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart! Listen to Eddie Webb tomorrow (Thursday) night in the 6 o'clock hour, when you hear Eddie play "Crazy On You" be the 15th caller to win an Epiphone Ultra 2 guitar, same as the one Nancy plays! Plus you'll also score the brand new live CD from Heart "Dreamboat Annie Live."
Check it out here.
Nancy Wilson is quoted on the Epiphone Les Paul Ultra-II site.
"I am extremely happy about the new Ultra-II. I've never liked a lot of complex sound choices, especially on stage, but this guitar is versatile without being confusing. There are 5 or 6 sounds I can switch between in the course of one song and it really bridges the gap between acoustic and electric. That is especially great for me as I usually have to choose between one or the other on a song by song basis. This guitar is Awesome!"
You can still win a guitar signed by Nancy Wilson! Check it out here.

A little information about Ann Wilson's record label and the Grammy Awards. It would be so nice if Ann Wilson would get nominated, although I think her album might have been released too late in order to be considered this year.
Grammy pipeline
Berklee and Rounder help fuel tonight’s music awards
By Jed Gottlieb
BostonHerald.com
Sunday, February 10
Rounder is gaining Grammy ground; the rootsy record label set a company record this year with 12 nods.
Traditionally a folk and roots music label, Rounder released some surprising music in 2007, including Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’ “Raising Sand,” Heart front woman Ann Wilson’s “Hope & Glory” and psychedelic jam band Ween’s “La Cucaracha.”
Lauded as one of 2007’s best albums, “Raising Sand” just missed the cutoff date to qualify for this year’s Grammys. But Rounder did release the Plant/Krauss single “Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)” in time to nab a nod for Pop Collaboration with Vocals.
“We thought about rushing the Plant/Krauss record in time for the awards, but then realized that we wanted people to have enough time with the music,” said Rounder co-founder Ken Irwin. “But seeing this nomination makes us hopeful the record will play big at next year’s Grammys.”
“We’re not hit-driven like other labels,” said Irwin. “And we are really starting to spread out into a lot of different categories. So we always just try to put out quality music and see where that gets us. It’s gotten us years with 11 Grammy nominations. But 12 is an amazing first.” - Link

WINTER TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED

Lauderdale, FL (see complete tour itinerary below). Ann & Nancy Wilson will perform legendary Heart songs and Ann will also perform songs from her solo album, Hope & Glory (Zoë/Rounder Records).
Ann Wilson released her first ever solo album titled Hope & Glory on September 11th on Zoë/Rounder Records. Wilson selected cover songs and originals that inspired the title Hope & Glory, and created an album that is both socially conscious and thought-provoking.
Hope & Glory has received rave reviews from many writers and artists:
“Ann Wilson’s own vocals have grown more passionate over the years…” B+
- Entertainment Weekly
“Ann’s got great songs to wrap that great voice around and the result is just a record that really blows people’s minds. And for a vocalist to be wowing us 30 years after we first heard her, is something...There is no one better than Ann Wilson.”
- David Wild, Rolling Stone, Contributing Editor
“Ann Wilson is my hero. Her voice and stage presence have always been a tremendous inspiration to me. I’m so blessed to have had the opportunity to work with her several times over the last couple of years. She is always amazing, powerful and real. I don’t know what rock & roll would have done without her.”

The rumor has been going around for about a month or so now and the more research I do the more aggravated I get. First I should say this blog post is the opinion of the author of this blog. Usually I just post Heart news or news related to Heart. Rarely do I get political or controversial.
While checking out the Cheap Trick message boards, I was surprised to see how many comments about Heart that were just so untrue. Maybe being such a big Heart fan has blinded me to any criticism about them, but I don't think that is the case. Some of the comments about Heart and this rumored concert have been so off the mark. One person on the CT site said "I am a Cheap Trick purest! Only CT headlining will do! I don't mind Heart or Journey but I DON'T want to pay to see them(if I could get the ticket free that would be okay)! I agree that Journey is not the same without Steve Perry and well Heart is Heart(a little too mellow for my taste)!" This is almost the same comments being made on the Heart boards, accept some of the Heart Mongers wouldn't pay to see Cheap Trick or Journey. Most camps are in agreement that Journey isn't the same without Steve Perry, and the singer doesn't even speak English very well. I would not be able to go see Heart if Ann Wilson was not the lead vocalist, just as much as CT fans wouldn't go see them without Zander. As far as Heart being too mellow. Sorry but I don't think Heart's music sounds as dated as Cheap Tricks does. Actually, I can maybe name 2 Cheap Trick tunes. How can anyone say Barracuda, Magic Man, or Crazy on You are mellow? Us Heart Mongers know that Ann and Nancy can rock as hard as any band, including Led Zeppelin. If anyone thinks Heart is "mellow" I suggest checking out their shows when they have the whole crowd in awe after Ann sings The Who's "Love Reign O'er Me. " Watching Heart perform Black Dog and Immigrant Song is worth the price of admission. So as far as what band is the best and who should open ect. I think Heart should open and close the show. Actually I think they should just play without the other bands. That way the people that really appreciate Ann and Nancy Wilson as the music legends they are won't have to share them with the ones that consider them "mellow."
peace
Ronnie

The guitar will be part of an auction at SCT’s Backstage 2008 to help support SCT’s mainstage programming and education outreach. And huge thanks, again, to Ann, Nancy and Sue for their support and cooperation.
