Tampabay.com Concert Review

7/31/08

Say one thing about the Journey-Heart-Cheap Trick tour: After four solid hours of 70s and 80s rock, these three bands had nothing left to prove to anyone.

Here are some highlights from the tour stop at Tampa's Ford Amphitheatre on Wednesday night:

Heart sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson were brilliant in an hour-long set. If you've never seen Heart play live, then frankly you haven't seen the best that rock n' roll has to offer. When Nancy starts the frantic acoustic chord work of "Crazy on You," I felt like my heart was about to explode. "Magic Man" remains as powerful today as it did 32 years ago. And their acoustic version of "Alone" never seems to lose its charm.

The fans seemed surprised by Heart's commanding performance. A female fan two rows in front turned around and gushed at me: "God, I love Heart!" When waiting in the t-shirt line, where Heart's "Crazy on You" tank-tops were hot-sellers, another woman asked me, "Do you think Heart will come back and play more?" Nope, I told her while explaining the night's lineup, and she seemed crushed.

One missing piece to the Heart set -- "These Dreams," their 1986 classic sung by Nancy. But reportedly she had a cold, so we'll take a rain check. Read the entire review on the Stuck in the 80's blog.

A Perry-Less Journey: They Can Still Rock
By CURTIS ROSS
The Tampa Tribune

The bill could have had one wondering what year it was, but a crowd of around 15,000 - and not all of them grizzled concert vets like yours truly - braved the rain to rock with Journey, Heart and Cheap Trick on Wednesday night at Ford Amphitheatre.

With all due respect to Pineda's pipes, the strongest vocals of the evening belonged to Heart's Ann Wilson.

Playing second, she displayed a voice that has lost nothing, and maybe gained something in the way of nuance, in the 32 years since the band hit radio with "Crazy on You" and "Magic Man."

Both of those numbers were part of Wednesday's set, as were '80s hits such as "Alone" and "Heaven." But it was on The Who's "Love Reign o'er Me" that Wilson claimed the vocal crown.

One wonders if Roger Daltrey himself could match the performance Wilson gave on the tune, the dramatic closer of The Who's 1973 rock opera "Quadrophenia." It was an ideal choice for the evening, its music and lyrics capturing the tension of an impending storm. Read the rest of the review here.

Thank you to Heart Monger Seattleboy for the find.

New Journal Entry

Motley Sue has been part of the Heart management team for quite a few years now, and she is on the front lines when Heart goes out on tour. Dealing with the fan club, merchandise orders, getting ointment for Ann's new tattoo, and even working the merchandise booth at the show herself! I saw her last year in Verona, NY but she was swamped after the show with customers buying anything with Heart's name on it. Since I was there to hand out snipes to promote Ann Wilson's album, I wasn't able to meet her. She is a very busy lady. She has been trying to post Journal entries on the Official Heart Website as often as she can, and here is part of the most recent entry. Go to www.Heart-Music.com and click on the Journal section for the complete entry.

"The Texas shows were amazing. All three of them were sold out completely. The crowds were awesome.Reviews from all of the shows so far have been excellent, and most single out Ann's vocal performance as the highlight of the night."

Journey concert proves to be a fun family affair 'any way you want it'
By Alex Regnery
Daily Texan Online

"Heart took hold of the audience and the Wilson sisters didn't let them go until the crowd's ears were bleeding with joy. Older sister Ann still has a set of pipes on her that are unrivaled, while the younger Nancy managed to display great talent on the guitar, harmonica and mandolin, with which she made me swoon to "These Dreams." They delivered the rush of adrenaline that Cheap Trick was lacking."

Fergie and Slash take on Barracuda

In case any of you missed this "hidden treasure," here is a video of our cartwheelin' pop tart Fergie along side leather clad rocker Slash. For the life of me I couldn't figure out how these two got together, let alone decide to do Heart. Slash supposedly said that he could barely master Barracuda on Guitar Hero. The best part of this video, well entertaining that is, was when Fergie knelt in front of Slash and bobbing her head all over while he played his guitar solo. Then fergie slithers across the stage and looks as if she is almost about to pass out, then starts...touching herself in a provocative manner. Then of course the obligatory cartwheels across the stage are thrown in for good measure. The song structure is somewhat different from the Heart version, and they end it with Guns n' Roses Welcome to the Jungle.

This was recorded at the Orange County Fair on July 19, 2008. Fergie with GNR/Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash.

In the Studio Book Review

Heart: In the Studio

From Classic Rock Today

If you’ve ever wondered about the sonic perfection behind timeless classic rockers like “Magic Man” and “Barracuda,” your ship has come in. Heart In The Studio, a new book written by Jake Brown and published by ECW Press, digs deep into the nitty gritty of the writing, recording and studio wizardry that went into every Heart album.

The book also touches on Ann and Nancy side projects, notably on the former’s 2007 solo covers album, Hope & Glory, which includes duets with Gretchen Wilson, Wynona Judd and Elton John. The final chapter speculates on the group’s future, suggesting their next album might be something more conceptual, akin to Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon. That could be interesting. Journey, Heart provide a dose of retro rock
by Joey Guerra

Heart has also endured personnel changes, but the group's, um, heart -- sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson -- remains intact. It gave Saturday's retro-rock opus its true pulse. If anyone's due for a comeback, it's these riot girls.

The group's too-short, 55-minute set veered from rock drama to acoustic tenderness (and kicked off when the sky was still bright). There's still a hard, urgent edge to much of Heart's music, and the band is tight and tough, anchored by the expert guitar work of Nancy and Craig Bartok.

Wild Child, a track from 1990's Brigade, was an unexpected introductory blast. It was followed by searing versions of Straight On and an epic, unrelenting Magic Man.

Nancy's vocals were sweet during These Dreams, but Ann's powerhouse wails give Heart its emotional center. She redeemed a drippy version of Alone, unwisely toned down from the deliciously bombastic original. We want the rawk, ladies.

Better was a startling take on the Who's Love Reign O'er Me, which made the most of Ann's magnificent pipes. And when the first chords of Barracuda kicked in, the sky suddenly seemed to darken and dramatic stage lights flashed across the crowd. The intensity carried through set closer Crazy on You, an accurate encapsulation of the frenzied fan reaction. Read the entire show review here.

Classic Rock Revisited Review

Cheap Trick, Heart & Journey
Zoo Amphitheater
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
by Jeb Wright

With the heat still beating down, Ann and Nancy Wilson both took the stage dressed in black prompting Ann to say, "I hope everyone brought a sweater tonight; it’s kind of cold out here." Again, despite the unrelenting heat, Heart put on a great, albeit short show, that featured many of their greatest hits.

Heart opened up with a song many had forgetting about, the rockin’ "Wild Child" from the album Brigade. The haunting balled "Never" followed as the crowd sang along. Heart threw the crowd a bone with two of their most classic songs delivered back-to-back, "Straight On" and "Magic Man." The latter raised the energy through the roof as Heart had the crowd eating out of their hand. Nancy was dancing and high kicking throughout the song and Ann – her vocals are amazing. Hearing her voice recorded is one thing but hearing her live is another. Ann deserves all the praise thrown her way and actually may be a underrated. She is one of the best vocalists I have ever seen live. No one walks away from a Heart show without being astounded by her vocal prowess.

The band slowed things down for a folksy version of "These Dreams" followed by another ballad, "Alone." Next up, however, was a surprise for the Oklahoma City faithful. Thunder roared from the speakers as the band covered The Who’s "Love Reign O’er Me." Ann wowed everyone as she made mincemeat out of Roger Daltrey! The set ended with the powerhouse rocker "Barracuda."

Heart returned for an encore with Nancy wielding a mandolin. Always known as huge Led Zeppelin fans, Heart tipped the hat to the British rock gods with a chilling version of "Going to California." Ending the set was "Crazy On You." Nancy stole the show on this one as she pounded the acoustic so hard it is a wonder the strings didn’t snap in half. Heart left the stage to a standing ovation. -Link

Trio of great bands rock Mid-America Center Tuesday
Kim Bousquet
SWIowa News

The mega concert at the Mid-America Center Tuesday gave thousands of fans an excuse to sing loudly and without abandon. Journey, with great openers Cheap Trick and Heart, rocked the arena playing the classics and ballads everyone craved to hear live. Whether you were a Journey fan needing to belt out "Faithfully," a Cheap Trick follower wanting to sing along to "The Flame" or a Heart lover who needs to sing and sway to "These Dreams," there was something there for you.

Ann and Nancy Wilson, with an excellent accompanying band, took the stage next, playing great Heart hits like "Magic Man," "Alone" and "Crazy on You." Ann's voice is still stellar and hasn't diminished a bit. Nancy sounds good, too, singing "These Dreams" sweetly. Heart played two encore songs to deafening applause from fans, including a slow Led Zeppelin cover of "Going to California."

TCPalm Nancy Wilson Interview

Heart joins Journey, Cheap Trick in West Palm Beach
BY BILL DEYOUNG
TCpalm.com

For more than 30 years, sisters Nancy and Ann Wilson have been rock stars of the first order. As Heart, they and a revolving band of musicians have survived one dramatic change after another in the erratic world of big-time showbiz.

Guitarist Nancy and lead vocalist Ann are Seattle natives, but with such smash songs as “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You,” “Barracuda” and “Little Queen,” they became citizens of the world — Heart sold millions of albums in its first five years alone.

The band will play the Cruzan Amphitheatre on Thursday, on a bill with fellow veterans Journey and Cheap Trick. On the phone from a tour stop in Denver, Nancy Wilson talked about three decades on the road, the business of classic rock, and the shudder-inducing thought that Heart might have, perhaps inevitably, become an oldies act. The Zoo Review

Review: Classic rockers heat up the Zoo
Newsok.com
Brandy McDonnell
Entertainment Writer

A potent brew of crowd-pleasing hits, dynamic showmanship and bone-rattlingly loud rock ‘n’ roll cast a spell on the Zoo Wednesday night.

The triple-threat of Journey, Heart and Cheap Trick — all rock bands that have been making music for more than three decades — attracted a sell-out crowd of 10,000 sweat-saturated, sun-scorched rock fans to the Zoo Amphitheatre. Near 100-degree temperatures didn’t dissuade the masses from waving their arms, bobbing their heads and shouting along with the classic rockers.

The packed venue was not for the claustrophobic or feint of heart, particularly once headliners Journey and the consummate rocker chicks of Heart commanded the stage.

Heart may have been playing in the second slot, but the ever-impressive Wilson sisters and their band proved they are second to none, not even the night’s headliners.

Through their hits “Crazy on You,” “Never” and “Straight On,” Ann Wilson belted out vocals with seemingly effortless power, while Nancy Wilson’s fleet fingers kept coaxing heady rock out of her guitar as she bounced tirelessly around the stage. Ann’s tuneful wailing on “Magic Man” elicited goosebumps even in the heat, and she proved she is one of the only vocalists worthy to cover Led Zeppelin with her achingly lovely “Going to California.”

The band wowed the crowd with a heady cover of The Who’s “Love Reign O’er Me” leading into a scorching rendition of “Barracuda.” Read the review in its entirety here.

Oklahoma Review

Tallulah2 from the Heart Boards shared this wonderful review of the Oklahoma City show. The song 'Never' WAS in the set list!

"Everyone in the band seemed like they were just in a really great mood, very happy to be there--and the crowd was extremely receptive (the announcer said that Heart hadn't been to Oklahoma in a while). I really love Wild Child as an opener. It teases you for a while with the introduction before it launches into full rock mode, which is fun. Craig was on fire with his solo in that one, too!"

"We were really excited to hear Never, since it's the first time we'd heard it live, and this version is so cool! They've reworked it a bit where it goes acoustic in the verses, which just sort of puts a personal Heart stamp on it, and makes it a little more timeless. The song still totally rocks, though, and the younger crowd was really eating up the 80s stuff. There was lots of singing along with that one, Magic Man, and Alone."

Heart Monger Guitarmaven was also there and had this to say.

"I have to say that seeing Heart perform to that many people (Sold out -17,000 I think?) and having every single person singing along with them is a great experience. I found myself looking back at the crowd a few times because I wanted to see how they were reacting. It made me feel proud as a fan so I can only hope that the band felt that proud, too."

Journey veteran sings praises of new vocalist
By Don Zulaica / LiveDaily Contributor

With "Revelation" racking up more than 100,000 units sold during its first week of exclusive sales at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club, Journey is enjoying something of a rebirth on the group's current US tour with Heart and Cheap Trick."I think it is sort of a renaissance," keyboardist Jonathan Cain said from a tour stop in Council Bluffs, IA. "Maybe we're seeing a bit of a younger audience out there coming back to the old stuff. Heart seems very strong right now, and Ann Wilson is probably one of greatest female rock singers alive. She's sounding incredible. Cheap Trick is so much fun--you couldn't ask for a better bill." Read the rest here.

From the Omaha World Herald

The most satisfying set on the night came from Heart, led as always by Ann Wilson's searing vocals and sister Nancy Wilson's fine guitar work. Although Heart's biggest success came in the mid-1980s with such power ballads as "Alone" and "Never," the brightest moments of Tuesday night's hourlong set were on harder-rocking songs — from "Straight On" to "Magic Man" to "Barracuda" — from the band's early days.

Drummer Ben Smith was also absent from this show with 3 Doors Down drummer Greg Upchurch filling in. This video is some good footage of him and he sounds great with the band!

"Greg Upchurch, drummer for '3 doors down' stepped in to take over for Ben until he could get things worked out at home. Greg is a phenomenal drummer and a fun guy. If anyone involved had nerves about the situation, they were alleviated after we played our first show with Greg. Ann Wilson's Tattoo

It was reported by a member of Hearts management that Ann Wilson has gotten a tattoo. For most Heart fans this isn't news since we all know, but I am sure we are all dying to see what it looks like. Here is a close up of part of the tattoo on Ann's right arm.

This is the journal entry from Motley Sue and it appears on the Official Heart Website.

Today is July 11th and we are in Salt Lake City, Utah. I've unloaded my merchandise and the inventory counts are finished. The crew is waiting around for the bands to arrive and do soundcheck.

Its the calm before the storm.

So far so good on this run.... but then again its only day two.

First day of rehearsal in Denver, I arrive at the venue. The band had arrived the day before. I go in to the dressing room to say hello to Ann, and she says she wants to show me something. I think its a piece of jewelry or something, because she's moving her sleeve, and low and behold... it was a new tattoo on her right arm (elbow to wrist). Its a floral tattoo of Iris's. At first i thought that it was painted on because it looked so bright. Then I realized it was because it was so new.

Ann said that for her first tattoo it wasn't as bad as she thought it was going to be. She decided to get the Iris's in memory of their mother Lou. It really is beautiful. She asked me what she should be putting on it, and i suggested what i use on mine... (and yesterday during the day off I picked it up for her).

Here are some random thoughts...

Arnel (the singer for Journey) looks like he just won the lottery, his joy is contagious.

Cheap Trick is awesome. So fun to watch.

Robin Zander introduced himself to me - "Hi, I'm Robin, I'm a friend of Ann Wilson's" (sooo sweet)

Nancy's laugh makes everyone happy

until next time ~

The other feel-good discovery of the night was hearing Heart's Ann Wilson belt out her band's classic songs like she was still in her 20s. Whether being subdued ("Dog and Butterfly") or boisterous ("Barracuda") Wilson's voice was tremendous.

But it was never better than on a stripped-down version of "Alone," which featured only Wilson, her sister Nancy on acoustic guitar and keyboardist Debbie Shair. Ann Wilson sang well under a few higher notes during the first chorus, which caused me to wonder if, indeed, she could still reach them. Later in the song, though, she seemingly went to those notes and beyond in a powerful display that was in sharp contrast to the earlier restrained take on the tune. The crowd noticed and roared its approval.

Heart also stood out on the hits "Kick It Out," "Magic Man," "Straight On," "Crazy on You" and "These Dreams," the latter featuring Nancy Wilson on lead vocals.

A welcome surprise was the band's take on Led Zeppelin's "Going to California," which sounded quite good and was a great addition to Heart's hour-long set. -link

Performing Songwriter - Nancy Wilson

7/13/08

Nancy Wilson has been learning to play the fiddle. So far, it’s slow going. “I basically suck,” she says with a laugh.

Have no fear—she’s only had one lesson, and if history is any indication Wilson will master the new instrument soon enough. The self-proclaimed “jill of all trades” is already a whiz on mandolin, keyboards, pedal steel and dulcimer, among others. But no matter how fine a fiddle player she may become, she’ll likely never be stolen away from her first love: the guitar.

From the moment she and older sister Ann saw the Beatles performing on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, she knew the guitar was the key to her future. Responding to her pleas, her parents gave her a three-quarter-size Stella. “It had a pipe-shaped neck and a movable bridge—which was good, because as it was going out of tune you would move the bridge to compensate!” she recalls. “It was steel-stringed, and the action was way too high. It was painful, but I wanted to play so bad. My parents saw that I was serious, so they swapped it out for something decent. Then I was like, ‘Oh god, I can actually do this.’”

USANA Amp Review

Taken from the Deseret News
By Scott Iwasaki

While Journey was the headliner, the night was also good for Heart. Fronted by sisters — guitarist/vocalist Nancy Wilson and lead singer Ann Wilson — the band tore through a load of hits that included "Straight On," "Magic Man" and the acoustic-laden, "Dog and Butterfly."

Older-sis Ann's voice was still as powerful as it was 30 years ago when the band cranked out the trademark rant of "Barracuda."

Little sister Nancy was able to step into the spotlight with her lead vocals and mandolin on "These Dreams," which opened the way for a piano/guitar quiet version of Ann singing "Alone."

The band threw a couple of cover tunes into the well-balanced mix, paying tribute to the Wilson's musical influences. The Who's "Love, Rein O'er Me" and Led Zeppelin's "Going to California" became Heart songs Friday night.

Of course, the last song of the set was "Crazy on You."

Still, the audience found itself riding high after Heart and throughout the Journey show. -link

"It is a privilege to work on [my husband's] movies," Nancy Wilson said. "[But] I'm really interested in writing another studio album for Heart."

Heart and Journey enjoy return to rock spotlight

Preview - Veteran bands get a surprising boost from exposure on television shows.
By David Burger
The Salt Lake Tribune

This isn't a nostalgia tour.

At least that's the message Nancy Wilson of Heart and Jonathan Cain of Journey carry when their bands perform tonight at Usana Amphitheatre with Cheap Trick.

Heart is planning on going back into the studio later this year to record new music, and Journey just released an album that has been certified gold, while one of its songs, "After All These Years," came close to breaking the top 20 of Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart.

Part of the reason for Heart's resurgence is that the Wilson sisters - the remaining members of Heart - performed on the widely watched "Idol Gives Back" episode of "American Idol" this past season. Finalist Carly Smithson is an unabashed fan of Heart and reportedly plans to sing at least one Heart song during the "American Idols" tour now criss-crossing the country (and playing in Utah Monday and Tuesday).

Another reason for Heart's return to the public eye is that the band has two songs included on the popular "Guitar Hero" video game series.

"It's completely noticeable," said Nancy Wilson about her band's recent ascension. "We've seen younger and younger fans, even 10-year-olds - and they're all running to the front and yelling 'Barracuda.' It's amazing to have 10 more minutes of fame." Read the Rest Here.

Heart’s 32nd year is turning into a landmark for the Wilson sisters and their bandmates.

The band performed “Barracuda” with their friend Fergie on the “Idol Gives Back” charity special April 6, prompting digital sales of the original 1977 top-10 hit and the band’s live and studio greatest hits packages. The television performance also turned into the No. 4 video download on iTunes.

“ ‘Barracuda’ is usually five minutes long, so we were sweatin’ it with the arrangement, and so was Fergie,” guitarist Nancy Wilson told The Associated Press. “We had two chances to get it right. We actually did it right when it mattered.”

The band also reissued “Jupiter’s Darling,” its first album since 1993, on June 3, and lead singer Ann Wilson released her version of John Lennon’s “Isolation” as a single from “Hope & Glory,” her solo debut from last year.
In addition, Heart is on a 40-plus-date tour with fellow rockers Journey and Cheap Trick, a tour that makes a stop Saturday, July 12, at Harveys Resort Casino.

Today, Heart consists of vocalist Ann Wilson, with her powerful upper register, along with Nancy Wilson, Ben Smith, Rick Markmann, Debbie Shair and Craig Bartock. The band has planned to follow “Jupiter’s Darling” with a new release later this year.

Brief Reviews of Fiddlers Green Show

"The Cheap Trick portion lasted about 45 minutes, and they promptly exited right at 7:45. I don't know enough of their songs to provide a set list, I did recognize the Mind Police, Surrender and The Flame.

Heart played several songs I didn't know as well, but among the ones I did know were: Alone, Never(???), Barracuda, Magic Man, Crazy On You. They did one encore and ended around 9:05. (Heart played for an hour)"

"Journey came out around 9:15. They played a shortened version of revelation first, followed by Only the Young. There appeared to be a technical problem with the wiring for Neal's guitar during the first number, the technicians were frantically working on it and Neal did not look happy about it. While they were working it out Jonathan went to the piano and played Send Her My Love which appeared to be unplanned, but sounded great. After getting everything working, they were able to play Stone in Love."

"When I saw the crowd capacity of the venue I was nervous if they were able to fill the venue, and I was amazed, it was sold out! Packed, like the entire city of Denver came by and jammed with Journey!

There are familiar songs from Heart - Ann and Nancy looked great and Ann still delivered the same feel to her famous song Alone, they also sang These Dreams."

Brad Hughes Art

Brad Hughes is a Heart Monger and shared this with the rest of the fans on the Heart message boards. He sent me and email with some information about himself and why he loves Heart!

"My name is Brad Hughes, I'm an animator. Right now I'm working on a feature film for Disney called The Princess and the Frog.

My Heart obsession began the first time I ever heard Crazy On You. I was blown away by the rockin' acoustic intro and then Ann's voice! I remember thinking 'What is this??!!' And then when I found out the guitar was being played by Nancy, I was totally hooked.

"I've been to a few hundred Heart shows over the years, and people wonder how you can see a band that many times. I think all the other mongers know what I do, they just keep getting better!"

Thanks for sharing you drawing it's awesome!
