With Ann Wilson’s voice a wonder to behold, Heart hits the jackpot

NEWS POP MUSIC CRITICNIAGARA FALLS — Overheard at Saturday’s sold-out Heart gig in the Seneca Niagara Casino, from a dude who appeared to be roughly 40 years old: “They don’t make music like this anymore.”
Well, technically speaking, some people definitely do make music this adventurous, virtuosic and frankly rockin’. But we’ll concede the man his point.
It was fitting that Heart played a casino, for seeing them was like winning a jackpot of sorts. Strong songwriting, dynamic and incredibly hot band, killer live performance, sublime sound. Thank you very much, I’ll be cashing out now.
Flanked by her guitarist sister Nancy, Ann owned the gig, though she did so with subtlety and grace. Routinely referred to as the “female Robert Plant,” Ann might more properly be called Jeff Buckley’s feminine half. Nailing the highest notes during “Magic Man” with no apparent effort, and appearing to be truly digging guitarist Craig Bartock’s sinewy, snaky fills during the song’s midsection, Ann did the seemingly impossible — tackling a style of singing long held to be both masculine and macho, and making it all feel deliciously female. Seriously, what is up with that? Who else can we say the same about?
Soulful, dynamic, exciting, exquisitely played, and pushed forward by one of the finest voices rock has ever known, Heart’s show was a joy to behold.

It has come to this -- rock's little queens performing for middle-aged rockers and greying casino high-rollers in a 5,000-seat auditorium.
But, hey, if Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson -- 58 and 55, respectively -- can find inspiration in the moment, then who are we to argue?
