Red Velvet Car Song By Song

RED VELVET CAR
SONG BY SONG WITH ANN AND NANCY WILSON

THERE YOU GO: We made the guitars and drums in the song sound like a quagmire because that’s what’s all around the young person in this song. It’s a song of warning about the dangers of this world, and so the instruments are all bleeding into one another and there’s a sense of intensity and things buzzing out of control. (ANN) The song and its purpose mutated. Craig Bartock and I started it as a cautionary tale, a warning to a young woman on a red carpet. But when Ann got a hold of it, the song became something else entirely and something really phenomenal.

WTF: It started like a jam, like that song by Cream “SWLABR.” Later when I wrote the words, they were really angry and they just blasted out of me, like I might have just as well said, “What the ****?” (ANN) Craig had that amazing guitar part, and then Ann came in with this scream of lyrics. I thought maybe the song was about someone else, but then the other day Ann mentioned it’s kind of the way you talk to yourself. Basically, it’s intense, and to me it’s about making mistakes and how hard it is to stay human. (NANCY)

RED VELVET CAR: When I first said those words, I knew it right away that it was a phrase worth using in a song. Sue Ennis -- our friend and our co-writer from way back -- was in town and really needed a rescue from the Hollywood hotel where she was attending a seminar. I said, “Are you kidding me? I’d come get you in a red velvet car. I wrote it down immediately. Ann took that title and ran it. (NANCY) Nancy is like Ringo in that sense. She’s always been great at coming up with cool turns of phrase that don’t really need to be explained because they communicate something powerfully. Musically, I’ve got to give it to Ben Mink, because I wanted the song to have that R&B sensuality to it, but also something fresh, and I think together, we got it.

QUEEN CITY: That song is a real retrospective. We wanted to write about our chronology really and this dear place we came from and that I still live in -- Seattle. We tried to do it by jumping into different scenes, from childhood to the grunge scene. It’s about our home, and our lives. (ANN) Before we were the Emerald City, or the Jet City, we were Queen City. (NANCY)

HEY YOU: “Hey You” is about the arc of a love affair, and gratitude for what was there and maybe what is no longer there. This song took me about ten years to finish. Perhaps I was waiting for a kind of ending. But I could never get it right until I worked with Ben Mink. It reflects a sort of poetic overview of life that might hurt a lot, but it’s not bitter. When I first came up with those words, I thought could it be that simple? Yes, it could. (NANCY) The song starts very romantically and ends very philosophically, and it’s really quite heartbreaking. Nancy is such an amazing lyric writer when she is left to her own devices. She really pours her heart out so beautifully. I love it. It will probably get people guessing, and I think that’s how she wants it. (ANN)

WHEELS: I love that song -- it was a bit of a dark horse that one. Ben had a beautiful groove for a score he was doing, and we had the bass line in our back pocket for about twenty years. (NANCY) “Wheels” came from a bass line we were working on many years ago, trying to write a song for the movie Midnight Run. We wanted to have songs that reflected all our travels – and the idea of travel -- like Joni Mitchell did so well with Hejira. Ben took that idea and really ran with it. (ANN)

SAFRONIA’S MARK: Safronia was a great, great, great grandmother of ours from the Civil War era. (ANN) The song became this gypsy folk urchin song and another Seattle story. It felt like it could be one of the first songs we wrote for Dreamboat Annie. Even at this distinguished age, there was so much enthusiasm, like the first time we had the chance to write songs. It felt completely honest, and had no shred of any specific time. (NANCY)

DEATH VALLEY: It’s one of those American pioneer images, but it’s a lyric that came straight out of a text from Ann – and that word “text” is even in the song. It’s not a word you hear in a lot of rock songs, even now. I had the theme guitar part, and somehow it added up to make the song so visual. And it takes you inside the experience of when things get so bleak on the road, and you are just scraping to get there. (NANCY) It’s meant to show both in the music and lyrics the dreamlike desolation of a bad trip -- that sense you can get of feeling marooned on the road. It’s a large metaphor for life really, and the strange places we all go.

SUNFLOWER: It’s funny because when I first heard “Hey You” there were a few lines I thought I heard myself in. I privately, secretly thought she’d written a song about me. Then I found out it was definitely about someone else. So I told Nancy, and she then wrote “Sunflower” to try and write a song about me as a birthday gift. She said, “Here you go, here’s your present.” And I still get tight in the throat when I hear this song. (ANN)

SAND: This song would not go away until it found its perfect home. We recorded “Sand” with the Lovemongers, and kept playing it in different rooms until it found its rightful place. Ben Mink heard us play it live and said, “Wow, that’s such a great song, why don’t we do it?” It’s a tough one to get through because it sums up the arc of a love affair, or the arc of a life or the end of a season. It’s a simple concept big enough to imprint heavily in your life -- the idea that time runs out. (NANCY) Now “Sand” has finally claimed its power and its place. Some songs stay with you, and continue to live and that’s when you know you really have something.

MassLive.com Nancy Wilson Interview

Nancy Wilson reflects on Heart's career, preps for concert at MGM Grand at Foxwoods
Kevin O'Hare
The Republican

With a sparkling new album coming soon and a major North American tour underway, one might think it’s the late 1970s all over again for Heart.

The highly-influential group, still powered by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, is in the midst of its latest renaissance. But it’s a long way from the ground-breaking, house-quaking days of “Crazy on You,” “Magic Man,” and “Barracuda.”

Those early mega-hits put Heart on the map to stay, and they’ve sold more than 30 million albums in the years since.

During a brief break from touring, strawberry-blonde sister Nancy Wilson spoke from Topanga, Calif. on a wide range of topics, including the band’s career, the culture shift they survived in the 1980s, her life as the mother of twin 10-year-old sons with husband and film director Cameron Crowe, and the new album, “Red Velvet Car,” which is slated for release Aug. 31.

Heart's still in it: Ann and Nancy Wilson's new CD marks a rocking return
BY Phil Roura
DAILY NEWS

It may be hard to believe but Heart still has a pulse.

One of the first hard rock groups to be fronted by a sister act, Ann and Nancy Wilson, the band started beating in the 1970s before flatlining in the early '80s when they experimented with a new sound.

When they returned to their roots in 1985, fans responded, sending three albums into the top five.

Now, Heart is pumping again. They play the MGM Grand at Foxwoods on Saturday, featuring songs from "Red Velvet Car," their first studio album in six years.

Bay Area Reporter Nancy Wilson Interview

Heart to heart with Nancy Wilson
by Gregg Shapiro
Bay Area Reporter

Almost 35 years after the release of their classic debut album Dreamboat Annie, the Wilson sisters (Ann and Nancy) of Heart show no signs of slowing down. Their new album Red Velvet Car (Legacy) follows not only their previous studio recording, 2004's Jupiter's Darling,  but also Ann's first-ever solo release, 2007's Hope & Glory, on which she performed duets with Rufus Wainwright and Sir Elton John, among others. The good news is that the timeless Red Velvet Car has everything Heart fans have come to expect from the band, including razor-sharp rockers and mellow acoustic tracks.

Lilith Minneapolis Review/Photos/Video

Metric, Heart and Mary J. Blige at Lilith Fair, 7/18/10
By Jen Boyles
City Pages

"The Lilith audience started coming to life after a spirited alt-country hoedown by Court Yard Hounds (The Dixie Chicks minus the short one who famously dissed Bush) that culminated with "Ain't No Son" and some intense fiddling, meaning it was now time for sisterly duo Heart to take the stage. Nancy Wilson's grating guitar riffs wailed out on opening number "Barracuda," a stunning start to what would be a memorable 50 minutes."

"Dressed in all black and looking years younger than 54 and 60, the ladies of Heart tore through "Straight On" and "Even It Up" -- the latter featuring an impromptu chorus from the Stones' "Gimme Shelter" -- and then launched into a 3-song mini-set of tracks from their new album, Red Velvet Car (debuting Aug. 31). Miffed, the audience sat. Some even had the nerve to yell "PLAY 'ALONE!' while Ann was introducing the songs and giving us back story.  But fans got their way, not before new tracks "WTF" ("About little talks you have with yourself when you've just screwed up"), and "Hey You." Though the duo's slowed, acoustic performance of "Alone" was not nearly as beastly as many surely expected, it truly showed off Ann's robust howl."

"Heart finished with "Crazy On You" and "Magic Man" featuring live electronic effects from a distracting keyboardist whose gothic ensemble and plucky pigtails made her look like she was teleported straight out of Guitar Hero -- the only thing we could have done without. Our only wish unfulfilled: They didn't play "Never" or "Who Will You Run To", a small thing compared to witnessing these sisters show off their legendary rock n' roll prowess, something next performer Mary J. Blige said she was inspired by when watching Heart on MTV in the '80s."

*Just a note on this article. First, Debbie Shair is a fantastic keyboardist and she has been with Heart for quite some time now. I have seen her twice in concert and thought she was brilliant.
Second, I highly doubt that the same crowed that was cheering appreciatively was the same one that got "miffed" when they played new songs lol. Heart's new songs have gotten great reviews so far. Maybe the author was miffed because she didn't get a jukebox band.

Here is some video from the show.

Lilith Chicago Reviews

Lilith makes it to Tinley Park show
By Bobby Reed
Chicago Sun Times

Lilith is all about sisterhood, and in the case of Heart and Court Yard Hounds, that is literally true. Led by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, Heart delivered thunderous guitar riffs and soaring vocals with the ’70s classics “Crazy on You,” “Magic Man” and “Barracuda.” The band also played three solid songs from a forthcoming studio album, “Red Velvet Car.”

The Chicago Tribune had a more colorful description of Heart's performance.

Heart were the veterans, with singer Ann Wilson caterwauling blissfully through classic hits, such as "Barracuda" and "Crazy on You" while her sister/guitarist Nancy scissor-kicked and worked her machine-gun, rhythmic melodies.

Wilsons Upset About Heart Breakers

From Contactmusic.com - HEART stars ANN and NANCY WILSON are urging fans not to listen to their bitter ex-boyfriends and ex-bandmates, who are trying to recreate past glories on tour.
The sisters admit they're upset with comments former Heart stars Roger Fisher and Steve Fossen have made while promoting shows they're performing.
Nancy Wilson tells Billboard.com, "It's a little challenging to put up with some of the original lineup guys. Some of the original guys are trying to look back and trying to recreate something.
"They had a Heart reunion without Ann and Nancy, and... they were dissing us on the local radio and stuff, saying negative things about me and Ann. What can you do?"

Now we can see why there wont ever be a reunion of the original line up!

Kansas City Lilith Fair Review

Review | Lilith Fair at Sandstone
By JOEL FRANCIS
Special to The Star

It wasn’t until Heart took the stage at 8:45 that the fair had its first galvanizing musical moment. The raucous blast of “Barracuda” eradicated the gentle sway of the afternoon and invigorated a crowd that had traded the sun for the moon and was finally ready to move. Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson delivered a heavy slab of ‘70s rock that had fists pumping and hips shaking. Guitarist Nancy Wilson concluded her acoustic intro to “Crazy On You” with a scissor kick, cueing the rest of the six-piece band. Singer Ann Wilson was in top form, belting the refrain from the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” during their own “Even It Up” and easily finessing the dynamics of “Magic Man.”

Heart Kicks Off 'Red Velvet Car' Album with Lilith Fair Gigs
by Gary Graff

A desire to work with a specific producer, Ben Mink, drove Heart to record its forthcoming new album, "Red Velvet Car."

"We've always wanted to work with Ben Mink, and we've actually been sort of romancing him for a couple of years, just trying to get him in our corner to agree to do something," guitarist Nancy Wilson -- whose sister, singer Ann Wilson, teamed with Mink on her 2007 solo album, "Hope & Glory" -- tells Billboard.com. "After they worked together, it was like, 'Come on! Please! We've gotta do a Heart album with him.' It wasn't going to be right until we did."
