ArgusLeader.com Nancy Wilson Interview

Wilson sisters rock for Grand Falls
Argusleader.com

People usually think of Heart as sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson because they’ve performed out front since the mid-1970s. They’re the faces of the band, prominently featured in stories and, in their younger days, on at least two covers of Rolling Stone magazine.

While Heart was around shortly before the Wilsons joined, the sisters have been the mainstays of the co-ed band all these years. The siblings were experienced guitar and bass players and singers prior to hitting the rock scene.

“We had been playing quite a few years before the band — in bedrooms, churches, schools and garages,” Nancy Wilson said recently by phone from California, where the musicians are rehearsing for the upcoming summer tour. Read more.

stltoday.com

It's the busiest of times for the pulsating Heart, even this long after the classic rock group's heyday.

Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, the core of Heart, are everywhere in 2012.

There's a new tour that headlines Fair St. Louis next week, a new album called "Fanatic" they say is their heaviest ever, a memoir titled "Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul, and Rock and Roll," and a career-spanning box set, "Strange Euphoria."

"It's just time. It felt like a natural time for us to give," Ann Wilson says of the influx of all things Heart. "I don't think it signals any kind of ending or anything like that. It's just us feeling talkative." Read more here.

'Who Shot Rock & Roll'

Nancy Wilson, Ann Wilson and Craig Bartock
They stare out from the frames like the moment was still alive and breathing, the best images at the "Who Shot Rock & Roll" show, which celebrated its opening at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City on Thursday night.

But one series of images was real: Ann and Nancy Wilson, founders of Heart, stepping onto a stage to perform a short set of classics while surprised and giddy fans watched wide-eyed in the crowd. The pair did songs to sing along to, including "Barracuda," "Dog & Butterfly," "Crazy on You," and "Even It Up." Touring in support of their all-encompassing new four-CD box set, "Strange Euphoria," the sisters, both playing acoustic guitars with a third musician adding more strum, brought sound to a show whose impact lies in photographers' abilities to represent sonics via a single, striking, silent moment. "Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present," the first major museum exhibit on rock & roll to spotlight the creative and collaborative role that photographers played in the history of rock music. Coming to the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles Summer 2012.

Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock and Roll

Tuesday, September 18 marks the publication of the HarperCollins hardcover edition of Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock and Roll, the avidly-awaited insider's memoir penned by Ann & Nancy Wilson with noted Seattle-based author Charles R. Cross ("Room Full of Mirrors - A Biography of Jimi Hendrix"; "Heavier Than Heaven" - a biography of Kurt Cobain).

Since finding their love of music and performing as teenagers in Seattle, Washington, Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson have been an influential part of the rock music landscape. From 70s classics like "Magic Man" and "Barracuda" to chart- topping 80s ballads like "Alone" up to 2012's Fanatic, Heart continues as an ongoing force in pop culture, inspiring women and men alike with the power and beauty of their music.

Despite their massive success, Ann and Nancy have always faced a different kind of scrutiny than their male counterparts in hard-rock and metal band, and had to face questions that no male rock star ever would be asked. Kicking and Dreaming allows Ann and Nancy to communication as directly with the reader as their songs do with fans. A first-hand chronicle of tumultuous inter-band relationships, thirty years of roller-coaster fame and continual reinvention, and, of course, the kind of excess that can comes from the surreal, and hyper-real demands of life on the road, Kicking and Dreaming is an intimate, honest, and a uniquely female take on rock and roll life.

Press release from Heart-Music.com/Legacy Recordings
2012 PROVES BANNER YEAR FOR AMERICAN ROCK BAND HEART
WITH NEW STUDIO ALBUM & HARDCOVER MEMOIR ARRIVING THIS FALL

"Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock and Roll,"
The Revelatory Memoir by Ann & Nancy Wilson On Sale Tuesday, September 18

Fanatic, Heart's 14th studio album, arrives Tuesday, October 2.  The group's second full-length studio album for Legacy, Fanatic premieres 10 new essential performances from sisters Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson on songs including "Fanatic," "Dear Old America," "Walkin' Good" (featuring Sarah McLachlan), "Skin and Bones," "Million Miles," "Pennsylvania," "Mashallah," "Rock Deep (Vancouver)," "59 Crunch," and "Corduroy Road."

The first album of new music from Ann and Nancy Wilson since 2010's Red Velvet Car had its Top 10 debut in 2010, Fanatic was recorded in hotel rooms and studios up and down the West Coast, with Grammy-winning producer Ben Mink back at the helm with the Wilson sisters drawing from their own lives and personal experiences as inspiration for their music.  "Dear Old America" comes from memories of a military household and is written from the point of view of their father, a Marine Corps officer, returning from war ("When I get home, I'm going to own this town/Shine this medal/Wear that crown…."); "Rock Deep (Vancouver)" harkens back to the city where Dreamboat Annie was written; and "Walkin' Good" (a duet with Vancouver resident Sarah McLachlan) captures the joy of finding new life in a new love.

The title song is a celebration of the Wilson's life spirit: Ann and Nancy are fanatics about love, art, truth, and the belief that they can do anything together they set their minds to.

"What a crazy year we are having," said Ann Wilson.  "Our box set, Strange Euphoria, and our book, Kicking and Dreaming, each tell the story of our lives so far, personally and musically. Our new album, Fanatic, tells our story as it is now and brings it all up-to-the-minute. What a thrill to have worked with both Charles Cross and Ben Mink respectively on these, and of course to touch the musical magic Nancy and I have always shared together. Anybody want to RAWK??"

Music review: Wilson sisters curate three-CD/DVD set tracing Heart's career

To put together “Strange Euphoria,” Ann and Nancy Wilson dug into the vaults, unearthing demos, live recordings and deep album tracks that trace the 40-year history of Heart.

That makes the three-CD, one-DVD set that came out Tuesday far more than the usual “best of” package, particularly with the Wilson sisters’ reflections on each song in the package booklet. Read more.

Billboard Ann Wilson Interview - Fanatic and Book news!

6/6/12

Heart will bring fans up to date this fall, when the duo releases "Fanatic," its 13th studio album and the follow-up to 2010's "Red Velvet Car." Like that set, "Fanatic" was produced by Ben Mink and recorded in Los Angeles and Seattle, with Sarah McLachlan guesting on a track called "Walking Good." Wilson expects 10 songs to make the final cut from 20 that were recorded and says "Fanatic" is "pretty rock heavy. There are only two ballads on it. It's got a lot of edge. I spent a lot of time riding around on a tour bus the last couple of years, just way out in the middle of the country where the poetry speaks really loud. I had a notebook. I wrote a song about Pennsylvania. There's one about Vancouver. It's a fiery bunch of words. There's anger. There's passion. That's why it's called 'Fanatic,' because it's love fanatic."

Wilson says the additional songs recorded for the album will be used as bonus tracks for various editions of "Fanatic."

Meanwhile, a first draft of the book the Wilsons are writing with music journalist and author Charles Cross has been turned into Harper Collins, with a second draft soon to arrive. It's on target for a fall publication to accompany the new album, and Wilson says it's frank but not necessarily a tell-all. "Of course they want as much (dirt) as possible, but they also want it to be a good book and not just another thing thrown in the pile of sleazy rock books," she says. "It isn't going to kill anybody or paint anyone out to be an a**hole." Wilson says Cross interviewed some 80 people to corroborate and flesh out the tales.

HEART Interview for MSN on Box Set Release

Ann and Nancy Wilson: Heart-Shaped Box (Set)

From hard rock to 'folk music on steroids,' the Wilson sisters retrace their path 'around the block and back again'

By Sean Nelson
Special to MSN Music

In the 37 years since their first singles launched their band Heart into the world, Ann and Nancy Wilson have been through nearly every imaginable permutation of life in rock 'n' roll. They've been unlikely successes, superstars, has-beens, comeback kids, proto-feminists, elder stateswomen and now easily qualify as legends who have inspired several generations of artists.

A new box set curated by the sisters, "Strange Euphoria," compiles many of those phases -- from the raw demos of early classics like "Magic Man" and  "Crazy on You" through crowd-pleasing stylistic transformations like "These Dreams" and "Alone" -- with an eye toward revealing aspects of the band that never quite fit into the frame before. Epic Records and Legacy Recordings proudly announce the release of Strange Euphoria, the first definitive career-spanning, multi-label boxed set retrospective chronicling the seminal American rock band Heart, personally curated by Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson.

A carefully-considered anthology of biggest hits and best-loved songs set alongside deep catalog treasures, rarities, demos and live performances, Strange Euphoria, three compact discs and one DVD in a deluxe box, will be available everywhere Tuesday, June 5.

"In all the years we have been making music we have seen trends come and go," said Ann Wilson.   "We have always felt that to try and chase the latest 'it' sound is pointless, and we have tried to remain true to ourselves as songwriters and musicians.  Sometimes we have had amazing success and heard ourselves on the radio... other times not so much, but the music is always playing in our house.  In this box we have included many things that until now have never seen the light of day.  Also here are our favorite deep tracks and live moments that really speak to who we are on the stage and the connection between us and the people who show up to rock.  Enjoy this collection.  It has many facets just like we do, but the spirit running through it is all Heart.
